In NSW alone in 2006/07, the NSW Fire Brigade attended over 2,437 kitchen fires.
For most of us, our immediate reaction on seeing a fire is to put water on it to try and put it out. But we all need to remember that this isn't always the best thing to do, and in fact water can sometimes make a fire much worse.
This is the case for oil fires in the kitchen. If you have a pan of oil on your stove which catches fire, you should never put water on the fire. Water causes the oil fire to spread rapidly and can cause horrific burns.
