Contents insurance sum insured

When you sat down and decide how much contents insurance to take out, how did you figure out that sum?

Many people only think of their most valuable possessions when deciding on how much contents insurance to take out, and forget to take out contents insurance for their everyday basics.

For example, you might have included your fine china and 'special occasion' cutlery when you added up a figure for your contents insurance, but did you include your 'everyday' crockery and cutlery? How about your drinking glasses and food storage containers?

We often have people enquiring about their CD and DVD collections in relation to their contents insurance, but few who ask about their books. Did you think to include the value of all those books you have on your shelves when deciding on your contents insurance sum insured?

What about your jewellery? Many people remember their wedding rings and heirloom jewellery when deciding to take out contents insurance, but did you remember all of the other jewellery you might have for everyday use?

And what about your clothes! Did you think to include your clothes, socks, shoes and bags in your contents insurance? How about your kids clothes? Did you include all of the contents of your linen cupboard when deciding on a contents insurance sum insured?

This certainly isn't an exhaustive list, and you need to think of your own personal circumstances when deciding on a sum to insure your contents for. But just remember to include all of those everyday items as well as your prized possessions!
