Hypothermia: A Cold Weather Hazard

Hypothermia is a serious condition to be mindful of while enjoying the cold weather months. It can become a problem especially for older people. It is very important to be aware of and recognize the symptoms of hypothermia. Fortunately, there are things people can do to treat hypothermia and to help prevent it.

The condition of hypothermia occurs when a person's body temperature falls a few degrees below its normal range. A body temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit or below is looked at as hypothermia. Hypothermia is especially dangerous because it can reveal itself very slowly in a person. Some of the symptoms of hypothermia include paleness of skin, lethargy, confusion, shivering, and cold skin. If someone encounters a person who is suffering from hypothermia, they should first call for emergency assistance. Then, find a blanket to warm the person as much as possible. Older people are more prone to hypothermia because in many cases they have poor circulation and don't recognize that they are growing colder. In addition, their home may not be heated adequately enough. Ultimately, any person who does not dress appropriately for colder weather conditions is potentially at risk for hypothermia. Wearing a warm hat to keep the heat from escaping the head is an especially important practice. Putting on gloves, warm socks, and a heavy scarf in cold weather are also helpful in avoiding this condition.

A person who is aware of the dangers of hypothermia is better able to prepare for an outing on a cold winter's day. Furthermore, making sure that older relatives and friends are receiving an adequate amount of heat in their homes, as well as wearing appropriate clothing is always a wise idea.
