Ocean yachting is an exclusion listed in our General Exclusions, but you are covered for travel overnight on ferries and cruises. Boating or sailing overnight may fall into our General Exclusions, so if you are unsure, you can call our team before you travel on 1300 368 979 to confirm whether your boating activity will be covered.

You are covered at no extra cost on ALL plans for most amateur adventure and sporting activities, including white water rafting, snow skiing, trekking, bungee jumping, cycling, para-sailing, hot air ballooning and water-skiing. If you are unsure whether your activity will be covered, please contact us on 1300 368 979.

You will not be covered for any damage, loss or legal liability arising either indirectly or directly from your travel within, to or through Syria, Sudan, Liberia, Iran, Iraq, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba or Afghanistan.

For Domestic and International travellers

Yes, you can extend your policy, as long as you apply for the extension and pay the required premium before the expiry date of your original policy.

Before we accept your application for extended cover, you will need to confirm your updated travel plans. We will review your plans and claims history before we accept your application. We cannot guarantee that we will accept the extension of cover. Terms and conditions may apply.

Your cover cannot exceed a 12 month period from the departure date listed on your original Certificate of Insurance.

For Frequent Travellers

You are unable to extend for trip beyond 45 days for an Annual Multi-Trip plan.

You should also be aware that acceptances for Existing Health Disorders cannot be extended beyond the original expiry date shown on your original Certificate of Insurance.

If you are either an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident, you have a Real Travel Insurance policy and plan to return to Australia at the end of your travel, then you are eligible for Real Travel Insurance cover.

Please note that if you do need to make a claim and do not have a return ticket when you claim, we will deduct the cost of your return fare from your last intended place of departure to Australia from any repatriation claim you may make. This fare will be calculated at the same class of cabin as your initial departure fare.

Yes! Real Travel Insurance are happy to offer cover to travellers aged over 70 at the time of departure for both domestic and international travel policies.

For travellers aged 85 years and over, you need to apply for cover using a Mature Age Assessment application. If you are accepted for cover, we will be advise you about your terms of cover and premium for your cover.

Select the travel plan specified for country you are travelling to. If you are travelling to multiple countries or regions, you should select the cover type designed for the country or destination where you will be spending the majorty of your trip.

However, if you will be spending more than 96 hours of your travel in the North American, South American or Antartic continents then you must select our Platinum Plan.

Please be aware that Real Travel Insurance policies do not cover any legal liability, loss or damage arising from travel directly or indirectly into, to or through the following countries:

Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Iraq, Iran, Liberia, Syria or Sudan.

For International Travellers aged under 70

Single Cover
The Policy covers You and Your financially dependent children or grandchildren, who are all under 25 years of age, who travel with You.

Family Cover
The Policy covers You and Your financially dependent children or grandchildren, who are all under 25 years of age, plus Your spouse, de facto partner of either gender or any adult Travelling Companion named in the Certificate of Insurance, all of whom must travel with You.

The Policy Holder must be between 18 and 69 years of age and needs to be included in the cover as an Insured Person.

For International and Domestic Travellers aged 70+

Single Cover
The Policy covers You and Your financially dependent children or grandchildren, who are all under 25 years of age, who travel with You.

Family Cover is not available for travellers aged 70+

For Domestic Traveller aged under 70

Domestic Cancellation and Emergency Expenses Cover

You can nominate up to 10 additional insured persons per policy. Premium are on a per fare-paying person basis.

For Frequent Travellers aged under 70

If You selected single cover, the Policy covers You and Your financially dependent children or grandchildren, who are all under 25 years of age, who travel with You.

A Spouse travelling with You can be covered on an individual trip basis by paying an additional premium.

The Policy Holder must be between 18 and 69 years of age and needs to be included in the cover as an Insured Person.

Provided you are an Australian permanent resident, travelling to an overseas destination, or within Australia (including Cocos Island, Christmas Island and Lord Howe Island) and you plan to return to Australia at the end of your travel, you are eligible to apply for Real Travel Insurance cover.

If you have financially dependent children under 25 years of age travelling with you, they are covered free of charge on our Annual, Domestic and International comprehensive products.

 

Travel Guard™ are a team of professional medical and travel specialists, available 24/7 to assist you during any travel emergencies you may have.

Travel Guard™ has access to worldwide assistance centre services including:

• medical appointments or referrals.

• emergency evacuations and repatriations.

• translation services in more than 70 languages.

• lost luggage assistance.

• replacement credit card services.

• help with any other problems you experience during your travels.

Where possible, reverse charge the call or call the number and we will arrange to call you back.

Provided you have not made or do not intend to make a claim, have not commenced your travel, and have cancelled within 14 days of purchasing your policy, you are eligible to cancel your policy.

If you are eligible for a cancellation, we will refund your premium in full, minus any Existing Health Disorder assessment fees, which are non-refundable. If you cancel your policy after you have commenced travel, or after the 14 day cooling off period, you will not be eligible for a refund. If you cancel your policy and recieve a premium refund, it will be as though your policy has never existed.

An excess is an agreed and specified amount of money that is deducted from your claim. If you make a claim with Real Travel Insurance, you may need to pay an excess. Our Policy documents explain these excesses and when they apply.

For International and Domestic Travellers under 70

Excess Payable for One-trip International plans:
5 weeks or longer duration $100 AUD
For Annual Multi-trip Plans $100 AUD
For One-trip Domestic plan $ 50 AUD
The excess can be waived by paying the excess eliminator.

One-trip International plans up to 34 days duration are free of an excess on claims.

Excess Payable For International and Domestic Travellers aged 70+

For Domestic travel plan $50 AUD
For International travel plans $100 AUD
The excess can be waived by paying the excess eliminator.


If you have an existing health condition you will need to call 1800 008 473 to complete an assessment. The assessment will determine whether we are able to provide you with cover for that condition. Please read the following for further information.

Some conditions are covered automatically by Real Travel Insurance. This is providing that there are no planned procedures for the condition, and that during the last six months there have been no complications or exacerbations of the condition.

Conditions that are automatically covered are:

• Acne
• Allergies
• Asthma – nil attacks requiring hospitalisation or medical treatment within the last 12 months
• Cataracts
• Coeliac Disease
• Diabetes – if diagnosed more than 12 months ago and have had no related complications or hospitalisations within the last 12 months
• Eczema
• Epilepsy – seizure free and nil change in medication within the last 12 months
• Essential Tremor
• Gastric reflux
• Glaucoma
• Gout
• Haemorrhoids
• Hayfever
• Hiatus Hernia
• Hip/Knee Replacements – performed more than 12 months ago and no ongoing treatment
• Hyper lipids
• Hypercholesterolemia
• Hypertension
• Hypothyroidism
• Insomnia
• Menopause / HRT
• Osteoporosis – nil fractures within the last 12 months
• Restless Leg Syndrome
• Sleep Apnoea
• Tinnitus
• Varicose Veins

For other conditions and in all other circumstances, an Existing Health Disorder application is required. If you have any doubts, please call us on 1300 368 979.

If you or any person on whose state of health your trip depends on, has a chronic or on-going medical or dental condition, or has a medical condition or dental condition which in the 30 days before you applied for Real Travel Insurance:

• required treatment, investigation, medication or advice from a doctor, chiropractor, physiotherapist, naturopath, psychiatrist or
• which you are aware of, or could be expected to be aware of, that may lead to a claim under this policy.

Then you may be required to apply for Existing Health Disorder cover. Please call Travel GuardTM to apply for this cover.

If you have an Existing Health Disorder, simply call Travel Guard™ on 1800 008 473  (8.30am to 5pm week days, excluding public holidays) to complete our phone-based medical assessment. Please be ready to provide Travel GuardTM with all necessary details including:

1. The traveller's full name and their age;
2. Details of the trip cover is needed for;
3. Details of the health condition, including current treatments and medications;
4. Contact details of the relevant traveller's current Doctor; and
5. Medical reports as requested from Travel GuardTM.

If the Existing Health Disorder is accepted, a non-refundable $60 administrative fee will also be charged for assessing Your application for Existing Health Disorder cover. An additional premium may also be charged to cover your Existing Health Disorder.

Please note that any Existing Health Disorder cover is limited to the term of the original policy.

Unfortunately some medical conditions and health-related events cannot be covered, these conditions are listed below: 

• conditions for which you have been given a terminal or malignant prognosis
• sexually transmitted diseases or viruses
• AIDS, HIV or AIDS related conditions
• alcohol or drug addictions
• mental or nervous disorders
• Your or any other person's depression, stress, anxiety, mental or nervous disorder, suicide or attempted suicide or self injury.
• depression or anxiety
• continuing with any form of treatment begun before your journey
• pregnancy or childbirth
• where you are travelling against medical advice
• where you are travelling for the purpose of obtaining medical advice or treatment
• any Existing Health Disorders of relative(s) who are not part of your travelling party.
