REAL Insurance at the Norwest Business Park is making a real difference to client services by employing older workers to properly reflect their client base.
The result is a win for the workers, the company and clients.
A Real Insurance recruitment team member said: “From a company perpective you need a blend of employees.”
The company has 220 staff at its Norwest base and is recruiting more.
“We have recruited about 50 people in the past 10 months as the call centre is growing bigger, we are growing quite fast,” he said.
“But it’s quite tricky choosing the right people for the job.”
The recruitment team member said the company welcomed people over 55 who wanted to get back into the workforce.
“There is a lot of benefit to us. We get the advantage of people with lots of experience and skills.”
Norm Freeman, 59, said he had almost given up hope of finding work after he was retrenched, despite being over-qualified for most jobs.
“I think our generation has a different attitude to work, a different work ethic,” he said.
He is team leader and oversees the part-time workers at the call centre.
“The business I was involved in suffered in the Global Financial Crisis and I found myself driving a truck after previously managing a call centre,” he said.
“My background was in the finance industry.”
His skills were a perfect match for Real Insurance and his life experience meant he could emphathise with customers.
Although he found customer service a breeze, he found computers a bit of a struggle when he started.
Marie Plowman, 57, had spent more than 30 years in banking when she took some time off.
“I wanted to go back to work because I love working and I have a lot to impart. Just being needed and valued is so important,” she said.
Jennifer Conway, 61, had taken redundancy after 25 years in health insurance. She started temping but had been looking for a permanent job for some time before she started work at Real Insurance.
“This is such a nice friendly team. It’s been really good,” Ms Conway said.
The recruitment team agree: “I personally value the experience mature workers bring us and the example they set the younger employees.”
