When the unexpected happens, optional Accidental Death Insurance can give your family additional financial support. If you pass away as a result of an accident, your loved ones could receive double the payout – up to $30,000 – to help ease the pressure of funeral costs and other immediate expenses, such as mortgage repayments, utilities, and grocery bills.

If you're looking to provide a little extra protection for those you love, this optional cover can be added to your Real Funeral Insurance policy, subject to eligibility.

Features of Accidental Death Insurance

  • You can apply for this optional cover if you are aged 40-74 and an Australian resident.

  • Your loved ones will receive double the payout up to $30,000, if your death is accidental.

  • You and your partner can both have different levels of cover on a joint plan.

  • Quick cash payment – usually within 1 business day of receiving completed documentation.

What does Accidental Death Insurance cover?

The Accidental Death Insurance benefit is paid if you pass away:

    • as a direct result of an accident; and
    • from injuries sustained in a sudden and unexpected event – for example, a fall or car accident – while your policy is active.

This optional benefit is intended to cover accidental death only, so if you pass away from any other cause, only the funeral insurance benefit amount will be paid.

For full details, including the definition of accident, and any applicable terms, conditions or exclusions, please refer to the PDS

What’s not covered?

The Accidental Death Insurance benefit won’t be paid if death results from:

    • Illness, disease or natural causes
    • Intentional self-inflicted injury, attempted suicide or suicide
    • Illegal or criminal activities
    • Alcohol or drug use (except where prescribed by a doctor)
    • Participation in war (whether declared or not), war-like activity, illegal acts or civil unrest

For the full list of exclusions and policy terms, please refer to the PDS.

Some things you should know

    • Death must occur within 30 days of the accident, or within 14 days after life support is stopped, provided life support first started within 30 days of the accident.
    • An accident is an event causing bodily injury with no other contributing cause and is not self-inflicted.
    • Cover ends when the funeral insurance benefit ends or the policy anniversary following the life insured’s 75th birthday.
