As winter creeps into Australia, the running calendar starts to explode with running events around the country. From full marathons down to a mile dash at lunch time, there is a variety of distances happening and a race for all levels of fitness.
Winter is the perfect time to start getting into running. Each run listed below has an amazing setting and scenery to run past from Uluru to wine country to the wonderful Sydney Harbour.
Real Insurance Sydney Harbour 10K – 14th July, 2013
In its second year, this is the most exciting race on the Sydney running calendar. With a completely flat course, this race caters for runners of all levels of fitness and features a course that takes in all the beauty of the harbour, city and The Rocks. A great track for runners who are training for longer races such as a half or full marathon, this event is the fastest in Australia with last year’s results breaking the record for 10K finishing times in Australia. Challenge your personal best at the Sydney Harbour 10k.
Australian Outback Marathon, Northern Territory
Taking place on 27th July, the Australian Outback Marathon takes in some particularly amazing scenery as it runs past the incredible Uluru in the Northern Territory. This event allows for all levels of running abilities, as it has the options of full marathon, half marathon, 11km and 6km courses. Attracting professional and beginner runners, this is an exceptional way to take in some of Australia’s unique landscape.
Traralgon Half Marathon, Victoria
Australia’s oldest marathon, the Traralgon Marathon in Victoria, takes place on Sunday 16th June and is also one of the cheapest to enter. The “Friendliest Marathon” has 3 levels of difficulty including the full marathon (42.2km), the half (21.2km) and the quarter (10.5km). This year’s running festival is the 46th anniversary and has cash prizes for the winners of the men’s and women’s full marathons.
Sydney Running Festival, NSW
The Sydney Running Festival is a must do in any runners' diary. Taking place on Sunday 22 September, this festival features 4 different events: Sydney Marathon, Half Marathon, Bridge Run and Family Fun Run. With so many options there is something for all levels of fitness. Australia’s most scenic course, each event starts in Bradfield Park, Milson’s Point and finishes at the Sydney Opera House.
Perth Marathon, Western Australia
Celebrating 35 years since its first race, the Perth Marathon has a very picturesque course following the river and paths through East and South Perth. As part of this event there is also a Perth Kids Marathon and a relay marathon for teams of four. The race will take place on 16th June 2013.
Barossa Marathon Running Festival
The Barossa Marathon Running Festival event has the perfect reward waiting for you at the end: a glass of wine. Taking place through the beautiful town of Tanunda in the heart of the South Australian wine country, this event follows a course that runs past many award winning and prestigious wineries, while taking in the breathtaking views of the Barossa Valley. This event also caters for all levels of endurance and features a full marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km race.
